SAFETY AT THE POINT

Kidde Fyrnetics ‘Slick’® range of hard-wired smoke and heat alarms has been installed to meet the complex fire safety requirements
of a
large holiday-let property on the coast of Anglesey.
Limited road access makes it difficult for fire engines too, which was another factor.

A review of fire safety at ‘The Point’ in Rhoscolyn, Anglesey, revealed that the old battery smoke alarms were prone to false alarms and battery removal,
and failed to meet the high standards of the property’s other facilities. Special care was needed because the occupants - up to eight at a time and normally
including children - would be unfamiliar with the layout and equipment of the house.

A particular concern was that one bedroom, often assigned to teenagers, was isolated from the three main bedrooms by the kitchen.

It was decided to install interlinked mains-powered smoke and heat alarms with battery backup, complying with BS5839 and Kidde's Slick®
range was chosen for its reliability and simplicity of use, as well as its neat appearance and the company’s technical support.
In some rooms vertical mounting of the alarms was chosen, as seen above.
The number, type and location of alarms was decided with the help of Kidde's literature and advice from the North Wales Fire Safety Officer.
As well as smoke alarms in bedrooms, heat alarms were installed in the Lounge, Kitchen and Boiler Room.

Slick® alarms are hard-wired in Optical, Ionisation and Heat Alarm variants and interconnectable.
Four rechargeable lithium cells on the circuit board give up to 8 months continuous backup
in the event of mains failure.
This feature is essential at The Point where mains power can be unreliable during the winter in such an
exposed location with the open sea on three sides.

The ‘Slick’® range is the only range of fast-fit, rechargeable alarms guaranteed for 10 years.
All alarms are BS Kitemarked to demonstrate consistent quality & compliance with the appropriate BS.
Typical Kidde product features such as separate test & hush buttons aid clarity for the user, as do twin LED s showing the alarm’s current operational state.

The property owner’s aim was to have a very reliable system which would not false-alarm, could be quickly silenced if it was accidentally
triggered and would ensure that everyone in the house was awakened quickly in the event of fire. The property owner commented:
" The alarms are very neat so you just don't notice them. It is so easy to explain to our guests how they work – and we have had no false alarms yet.
It gives me peace of mind to know that we really could not have done more for our guests' safety. "

Since the Slick® alarms were fitted, the owners have also decided to put in CO Detection too.
Kidde's new hard wired Carbon Monoxide alarms were interconnected to the existing installation.
